Surgical Center

While you are visiting, please check out our Surgical Updates page to see a list of some of the surgeries we perform as well as before and after photos.

We are pleased to offer the community the expertise and facility to perform a wide range of soft-tissue as well as orthopedic surgical procedures. Emergency surgeries such as spleen removal, stomach bloat/torsion, blunt trauma, etc. can also be performed on a moment’s notice. See below to learn a little more about the surgical process as well as what encompasses veterinary surgery at Anderson’s Corner Animal Hospital.

Dr. Andy Murphie has been pursuing orthopedic and soft tissue surgical training for the past 30 years. He has remained up to date on the latest advancements and surgical knowledge needed in the ever-changing environment of veterinary surgery. Orthopedic surgery has been a major focus of his training since the mid 80's. To make sure that your pet is receiving the best care, Dr. Murphie occasionally performs surgeries using a team approach with veterinary surgeons from the Richmond region as well as from veterinary teaching hospitals.

Many of his cases are referrals from other hospitals in the region. Dr. Murphie is grateful to all the veterinarians and clients who have entrusted him with these orthopedic cases over the years.

Surgical Process

  • If a referral, we first discuss with your regular veterinarian the diagnosis, history, and plan associated with treating your pet.
  • We then perform a physical exam on your pet, and give you a thorough explanation about what to expect from the surgical procedure.
  • Following pre-anesthetic blood work, each patient is prepared for surgery with clipping the appropriate region and subsequent sterilization.
  • The highest standards of veterinary anesthesia are utilized. See our anesthesia page for further details. Every patient has a trained veterinary technician who evaluates vital signs throughout the procedure. Respiration, heart sounds, pulse quality and heart rate, temperature, eye position, etc. are closely monitored throughout the procedure.
  • IV catheters with the appropriate fluids are utilized with every patient. Sometimes fluid rates and additives need to be used if there is inadequate blood pressure.
  • Anesthetic monitors that display the blood oxygen level, carbon dioxide level, EKG, and blood pressure are used before, during, and after the surgical procedure.
  • During the postoperative recovery period, every patient receives a treatment sheet to allow for monitoring and documentation of vital signs and recovery. Effort to correct any surgical hypothermia is also implemented.
  • All referring veterinarians receive a post-operative phone report to let them know how everything went, and the post-operative plan. If an orthopedic procedure, we also send a CD of post-operative digital x-rays as well as discharge instructions.
